GUM

The formerly government-run department store in Moscow, Russia (the acronym stands for Gosudarstvennyi Universal'nyi Magazin, or State Department Store, and is pronounced "goom"). Originally a bustling market, the edifice became filled with empty shops during Communist times. In recent years, GUM was restored and now contains stores such as Benetton, Lego, Nike, and Galeries Lafayette. The entire building is covered in the glass ceiling pictured here.
