flavin with a bit of woman

Dan Flavin with Woman

Another hip shot (also uncropped) from the Flavin Retrospective at Chicago's MCA.

I know this is a hip shot, but I think I'd have prefered if you cropped out the woman altogether. I find it a little distracting. I really like the colors on these last few shots, though. So does Dan Flavin just set up neon lights in interesting configurations?

Hmmm. Interesting. I actually captured some other images of this particular work without anyone else in the frame, but the more I looked at this one, the more I liked it. I like that it's just a sliver of a silhouette, but that you can still tell it's a person, that it's a she, and that she is walking to the left. I think otherwise, it would kind of be a boring photo, and I already posted one of those (the orange Dan Flavin picture). In a way, I'm glad the silhouette is distracting to you--that means in some way it's the focus of the photograph, even though it takes up so little space.

Yes, Dan Flavin basically was interested in using a very limited set of materials (fluorescent tubes in 10 colors and 5 shapes) and making "high" art with these everyday objects. The first time I saw a work of his, it was at the Tate Modern and it was just a yellow fluorescent tube on a 45 degree angle. I thought it was the most stupid thing I had ever seen. This exhibition, though really changed my perception of him. His stuff is really fun to look at--the way the light interacts with itself, the way he combines sculptural elements with the light.

I actually wouldn't have known it was a she unless it was titled so. I actually only now realized it's about the waist down on the woman -- I think my sense of scale was way off before. Interesting. :)
